MELBOURNE: One month after $11,000 was raised to fund the creation of a giant mural of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern embracing a Muslim woman in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks, the finished artwork has been revealed to the public.
The impressive mural graces the side of a 25-metre tall silo in Melbourne’s Brunswick and was created by street artist Loretta Lizzio after a GoFundMe surpassed its $11,000 goal in under 24 hours.
The iconic image of Ardern wearing a hijab and consoling a member of New Zealand’s Muslim community went viral following the attacks and was even projected onto the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
The original GoFundMe page described the photo as a “beacon of tolerance, love and peace”.
“We want everyone to know we are them, that they are us and, that we are, and always will be, stronger together,” the page read.
In March, 51 people were martyred when a ‘white Australian terrorist’ stormed two mosques in Christchurch and opened fire.
Australian man Brenton Tarrant is facing 92 charges – 51 for murder, 40 for attempted murder and one for terrorism – in relation to the attacks.
