Nirmala becomes first woman Defence Minister after Indira Gandhi

Hyderabad : As part of reshuffle and expansion of his cabinet on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sprang a surprise by elevating Telugus daughter-in-law Nirmala Sitaraman as Defence Minister.

            The BJP-led NDA government strategically nominated Nirmala, representing Karnataka in Rajya Sabha, as the first woman Defence Minister after the great Indira Gandhi. Nirmala Sitaraman so far held Commerce portfolio independently. She relieved Finance Minister Arun Jaitley of the additional charge of Defence.

Born on August 18, 1959, Nirmala Sitharaman became an eloquent orator. She was inducted into BJP as late as 2008 and achieved the post of Defence Minister of the country. Married to Parakala Prabhakar of Andhra Pradesh, Nirmala played key roles in the BJP and earned berth in the BJP government at the Centre and rose to the rank of Defence Minister by dint of hard work and administrative efficiency.
