Telugu Compulsory up to 10th Class: Dy CM

Hyderabad,  Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Education K Srihari today informed  the Legislative Council that Telugu will be made compulsory up to 10thclass in first phase and it  will be extended till Intermediate at a later date. A vigilance will be set up to check the irregularities if any in the mid-day meals scheme,  he said.

Srihari was replying to a  debate on mid- day meals scheme, introduction of Telugu as compulsory subject in all private and government schools and other matters. Srihari said that since  Telugu language is being taught at various levels,  it was decided by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to make it compulsory till 10th class in the first phase. The same will be extended further to Intermediate later on, he said and added that steps were  being taken to strengthen the mid day meals scheme.

            ‘We will set up a special vigilance wing on the implementation of the mid day meals scheme and providing better menu for the students’. It is being planned to increase the eggs supply to the students for about six days a week instead of three days, he said. The State Government is spending Rs 677 crore every year for the scheme being implemented in 28623 schools in the state and getting only Rs 300 crore from the Centre.

            While  the mid day meals is the central scheme up to 8th class,  the state government is extending it to 9th and 10th classes with its own expenditure. He said that the scheme gets 60 per cent of Central funds and state has to bear 40 per cent and Telangana is getting only 40 per cent funds from the Centre. The state government urged the Centre to extend the meals scheme to Intermediate and making efforts to rectify the related problems. The government has asked the officials to make frequent visits for hygienic food supply to the students as per the menu prepared. As per the plan  Akshayapatra is providing food  to some schools in the state Warangal will soon get the food supply, he said. He also informed that Rs 146 cr ore is being spent for construction of 7080 kitchens in the schools across the state by May end this year. We are providing gas connection to the schools for the scheme, he added.
