Hyderabad, Dec.28 (PMI): In the wake of High Court directive, the State Election
Commission has speeded up the process to hold panchayat elections in Telangana
at the earliest.
The Commission was preparing for the polls and will issue a notification
in January first week to conduct the polls for 12,000 village
panchayats. The State government has sent to the Collectors of all the
districts the details of reservations for SC, ST, BC and women in the
panchayats for sarpanches and ward members.
Accordingly, the district administration has geared up for the polls in
panchayats and awaiting a notification from the Election Commission. Followed
by the High Court directive, the State government issued an ordinance to follow
only 50 per cent reservations. As a result, the BCs quota got reduced by 11 per
cent from 34 per cent in the last elections to about 23 per cent now and giving
chance to the Opposition to protest.
The EC and the district administration are focusing on finalizing
reservations to the SC, ST, BC and women at Mandal level and the women will get
50 per cent reserved seats which will be finalized on lottery basis in a couple
of days. The State Election Commission is likely to release a notification soon
for election schedule, reservations and so on. On completion, the list of
reservations will be sent to the Chief Secretary and Panchayat Raj Principal
Secretary followed by gazette publication at district level. Interestingly, the
scheduled areas and tribal villages have no problem of reservations with 100
per cent allotted to them. (PMI)
