NIA sees plot to revive Indian Mujahideen

Hyderabad: A low intensity parcel bomb that exploded at Darbhanga railway station on June 17 in Bihar reportedly has a Hyderabad connection. Two persons from the western part of the city were believed to be the masterminds behind the blast and one of them was nabbed while he was planning to visit New Delhi, sources said.

Officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in coordination with Counter Intelligence (CI) Cell of Telangana Intelligence wing were believed to be collecting more information from the person. However, his brother could not be traced so far.

Sources said the two masterminds along with their contacts were reportedly contemplating to reactivate the banned terrorist outfit – Indian Mujahideen (IM), which was neutralised by the intelligence agencies after one of its co-founder Yasin Bhatkal was arrested.

Yasin, who was one of the Indian’s most wanted terrorists, was nabbed in March 2018 from the Indo-Nepal border for his involvement in a series of bomb blasts in the country. Yasin, who is now in a high-security prison in Maharashtra, was sentenced to death in 2016 in connection with the 2013 Dilsukhnagar twin blasts case.

The alleged links of two brothers came to light when the investigators found the parcel, which exploded, was booked from Secunderabad railway station parcel counter in the name of Mohammed Sofian on June 15. The parcel contained a bottle filled with chemicals and it was wrapped with sarees.

Investigators also found that those involved in the blast were in touch with a few people from a university in Uttar Pradesh. One of them took part in a secret meeting conducted in New Delhi, it is learnt. The parcel bomb case was probed jointly by the police from Telangana, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh before NIA took over it.

A top police official from Telangana confirmed that they shared information pertaining to the parcel booking from Secunderabad railway station with the investigating agencies. “We are unaware of other details of the case as the central agencies are probing it,” he said.
