‘Women far more likely than men to suffer from headaches’

15-04-2022

LONDON: Researchers have discovered that women suffer from headaches more than men, the Daily Mail reported.

Studies show that 6% of women spend half of every month with a headache, compared to 2.9% of men. This means more than one in 20 women are victims of a throbbing head.

Consequently, women are also more likely to tolerate migraines.

Researchers discovered that 17% of women suffer from migraines while only 8.6% of men are affected. These migraines are extremely painful and can last up to three days. They include high sensitivity to light and noise, with vomitting.

Differences in hormones between the two genders could be the reason. Fluctuations in estrogen, a hormone found in high quantity in women, are known to trigger headaches.

Professor Lars Jacob Stovner, who led one of the research studies done on headaches, said, “Women suffer much more than men from the most disabling headaches and migraines, which last for 15 or more days a month.”

“This matters because severe headaches, which are unpredictable and happen often, make it very hard to deal with life’s responsibilities like staying in a job or caring for a family,” he added. (Int’l News Desk)
