Israeli forces pound Rafah as truce talks stall

07-05-2024

RAFAH: Israeli air attacks kill at least 10 Palestinians in Rafah as Hamas fires rockets at the Karem Abu Salem crossing, killing three Israeli soldiers and wounding 11 others.

The latest round of negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza has ended in the Egyptian capital Cairo, but crucial gaps remain between Israel and Hamas.

The Israeli cabinet has voted unanimously to close Al Jazeera’s operations in the country. The communications minister says the orders against the network “will go into effect immediately”. Al Jazeera calls the move a “criminal act that violates human rights”.

At least 34,683 Palestinians have been killed and 78,018 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s October 7 attacks stands at 1,139, with dozens of people still held captive.

Gaza’s civil defence office said its crews in Rafah are dealing with “several attacks” on inhabited and uninhabited homes in the southern city.

It said Israeli forces have hit 11 homes between Sunday evening and the early hours of Monday. The attacks have resulted in dozens of people killed, wounded, and missing under the rubble, Palestinian officials said.

Throughout Israel’s war on Gaza, Al Jazeera has documented more than 50 attacks against our journalists. Here are just some of them.

January 2024, Israeli forces killed journalist Hamza Dahdouh in a drone attack on his car in Rafah. He was the eldest son of Wael Dahdouh, the network’s bureau chief in Gaza.

December 2023, Cameraman Samer Abudaqa was wounded in an Israeli drone attack in Khan Younis and bled to death after medics were prevented from reaching him. The attack also wounded Wael Dahdouh.

December 2023, Al Jazeera Correspondent Anas al-Sharif lost his father in an Israeli attack that hit his family’s home in Jabalia in northern Gaza.

October 2023, Wael Dahdouh’s wife, son, daughter and grandson were killed in an Israeli attack on a building they were sheltering in.

October 2023, An Israeli air attack killed 19 members of the family of Al Jazeera broadcast engineer Mohamed Abu Qumsan.

Before the war, in May 2022, Israeli forces killed veteran Al Jazeera Arabic journalist Shireen Abu Akleh while she was reporting from Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

And a year before that, Israeli forces launched a missile attack on the al-Jalaa Tower in Gaza City, which housed the offices of Al Jazeera and The Associated Press news agency, as well as numerous residences.

Hamas wants an end to the war, but Israel says it’s willing only to pause the fighting to secure the release of captives.

We had Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant visiting Gaza and suggesting that a major Rafah operation is coming. He said Israel has identified “alarming signs” that Hamas does not intend to reach an agreement and that this means Israel will start military action in Rafah and the entire Gaza Strip in the very near future.

Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, has said its fighters sniped an Israeli soldier in east of the Shujayea neighbourhood in Gaza City.

In a statement on X, the group also said its fighters bombed and struck a group of Israeli soldiers and vehicles in the so-called Netzarim Corridor with heavy-calibre mortar shells.

The corridor, named after the Netzarim Jewish settlement in Gaza that was dismantled in 2005, was built by the Israeli army to separate northern Gaza from its southern part. (Courtesy Al Jazeera)
