Iran’s President hails growing ties with neighbors

21-07-2022

TEHRAN: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi hailed the fruitfulness of the country’s diplomatic approach and the unprecedented improvement of the level of trade relations with neighboring countries, calling on all executive bodies to adhere to the requirements of this approach.

Speaking in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Raisi referred to his meetings in Tehran with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and talks between the leaders of the Guarantor States of the Astana Process, and said, “Thank God, the move to strengthen the neighborhood policy in the diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran that has been initiated by the administration is paying off.”

He added that in the bilateral meetings with the Russian and Turkish presidents, “both Mr Putin and Mr Erdogan insisted on the implementation of the agreements made with our country, which requires diligent follow-up by the relevant institutions.”

Referring to the request of the Russian leader to Iran to complete the Rasht-Astara railway line, Raisi assigned the First Vice-President to follow up the implementation process of this important transit corridor in cooperation with the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.

During their meeting in Tehran on Tuesday, Putin and Raisi exchanged views about the latest developments in the region.

They reviewed the latest state of Tehran-Moscow relations, which have developed significantly in recent years, and commended the leap in bilateral ties, especially in the fields of economy, security, infrastructure, energy, trade and industry.

The Iranian and Russian presidents pointed to successes achieved by the two countries in countering terrorism and emphasized the necessity of developing cooperation in new regional and extra-regional fields.

They also announced their serious will to help strengthen the security of independent countries in the region.

Raisi said Tehran and Moscow are remarkably determined to expand relations, and that cooperation between the two sides should continue to grow.

The Iranian president said successful cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism in Syria has prepared the ground for promoting security and stability in the region.

“Those countries in the West Asian region that claimed to fight terrorism did not take any effective steps in this regard, but it was the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia that showed their sincerity and determination in this field through serious cooperation in the battle against terrorism,” he added.

The Russian president, for his part, said Tehran and Moscow have increased cooperation in various fields, particularly in the field of international security.

Putin added that Iran and Russia play a major role in solving the crisis in Syria.

Earlier in the day, Raisi and Erdogan held talks on the promotion of bilateral relations.

The Iranian president said the Turkish president’s visit would “undoubtedly, serve as a turning point in the development of the bilateral ties,” adding that the countries were “serious” regarding the development of their relations.

The level of the countries’ trade ties could reach $30 billion, namely three times their current level, the Iranian president said.

On Tuesday, Iran and Turkey signed eight memoranda of cooperation concerning such issues as devising a comprehensive plan for long-term bilateral cooperation, provision of support for small economic agencies, cooperation in the area of radio and television, and cooperation between Iran’s Investment and Economic Assistance Organization and the Turkish Presidency’s Investment Office.

Erdogan, for his part, underlined the importance that fighting terrorist organizations had for the countries, saying, “We should confront terrorist organizations with all-out solidarity.”

The Turkish president also noted that the coronavirus pandemic had come in the way of expansion of the countries’ trade ties, voicing hope that Tehran and Ankara would be able to help the current level of the ties reach the $30 billion benchmark. (Tasnim News)
