132 more martyred in Gaza during last 24 hours

17-01-2024

GAZA CITY: Israeli attacks have continued overnight in northern, central and southern Gaza, with at least 132 killed in the enclave in the past 24 hours, according to the Wafa news agency.

Several UN agencies have appealed for “faster, safer” aid access in Gaza as the population faces famine and spread of disease.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it has attacked sites in northern Syria and Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, which it claims were used by ‘anti-Iranian terrorist groups’.

At least 24,100 people have been killed and more than 60,800 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from the October 7 Hamas attacks stands at 1,139.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has shared a post on X calling for safety for humanitarian staff delivering aid.

“We can’t effectively deliver humanitarian aid while Gaza is under heavy, widespread & unrelenting bombardment,” Guterres said.

Earlier, Guterres told reporters that 152 UN staff members have been killed in Gaza since October 7. He said this was “the largest single loss of life in the history of our organization, a heart-wrenching figure and a source of deep sorrow”.

The UN’s humanitarian agency yesterday said there had been a “significant deterioration” in aid access to northern Gaza since December, with only seven of 29 planned missions to deliver food, medicine, water and other supplies having reached their destinations this year.

The Israeli military says that one soldier was “moderately injured” and taken to hospital after a confrontation with armed men near the Nitzana border crossing between Israel and Egypt.

“Her condition later improved and she is now listed as being in a minor condition,” Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari wrote on X.

Israeli military said it had fired at “suspects” attempting to cross the border from Egypt, adding that it believed the individuals were attempting to smuggle drugs.

“Approximately 20 suspects, including several that were armed, arrived from Egyptian territory toward the area of the border with Israel,” the military said.

Ten people in a house sheltering two displaced families in Rafah were among 135 people killed in Israeli strikes over the past 24 hours, Hamas-run health ministry officials said.

The southern Gaza city’s population has swollen to well over a million people as displaced people from other parts of Gaza seek safety there.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was looking into the reports.
