STUDENTS’ SUICIDES IN COLLEGES Srihari calls meeting with colleges, parents today

Hyderabad,  Apparently annoyed at the unabated incidents of alleged suicides by students in some of the corporate colleges, schools and international institutions in the State, the State government was planning to checkmate the problem and take stern action against them.

Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari asked the parents not to treat as status symbol to send children only to corporate colleges and management centers should set up counseling centers at their premises. The students should not take extreme steps and bring the problems to the notice of parents and the government to address them, he appealed.

After holding a meeting, Srihari directed the officials to hold a meeting with the Parents and Private managements on October 17. The government plans to conduct a thorough inquiry into every incident of the suicides that were reported so far and will take serious action of cancelling recognition or affiliation of the colleges, he warned. He also said inquiry will be conducted on each and every case of suicide incidents and serious action will be initiated which includes even cancellation of the affiliation of the Institutions, he warned. “Parents should not exert pressure on their children for marks and ranks and should admit them into any colleges depending on their talent and efficiency.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the main reason for the problem was due to the pressure by the Private Institutions and Colleges on the students for getting best ranks. Even the parents are sending their wards to these institutions leading to compound the problem. Srihari asked the officials concerned to make surprise visits and collect the report of the institutions and action will be taken based on the report.  Notices have already been served on a few private college managements, some of whom approached the Court.
