Bureau Report

MELBOURNE: At least ten churches have been targeted in an Easter crime spree, with cameras capturing a brazen thief stealing from parishioners’ midway through a service in Melbourne.

It’s understood that one of the crimes was committed during a Saturday service at Saint Haralambous Greek Orthodox Church in Templestowe.

CCTV footage captured a man allegedly snatching a donation bowl from the bench and leaving with the $300 inside.

Police are investigating another burglary at the church early this morning.

Police believe a man forced entry into the building on Porter Street about 5.15am and stole cash.

George Papadopoulos of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Yarraville said his church was also targeted.

“Go and confess! For what you have done, you’re going to front Jesus one day – and you’re going to be judged,” he said.

Nine News understands at least ten Greek Orthodox Churches were hit, including some in East Keilor, St Albans, Balwyn, Altona and Oakleigh.

Police say they are working to determine if the incident in Templestowe is linked to reports of burglaries at places of worship in other areas over the long weekend.
